PROJECT LOCATION: Pleasant Hill, California SIZE: 3,000 sq feet PROJECT TYPOLOGY: Residential ROLE: Designer STATUS: Completed
After the loss of a large shade tree in their backyard, our client wanted to take more advantage of the existing shade within their underutilized front yard, provided by large mature trees and their covered porch, in order to socialize and relax. A bocce court was also on their wish list.
In response, we developed a simple yet elegant plan that incorporated two different areas under shade. The more formal deck, to be furnished with outdoor couches or a large table, and a smaller more casual area under the shade of mature trees. Sandwiched between these areas is a 40 foot bocce court with walkways either side to allow for play analysis!
Along the street boundary, plants of mixed heights are planted to enable different degrees of privacy whilst still maintaining visual connectivity with the street so chats with the neighbors are still possible. The materials palette is kept natural and local, and the planting is predominantly California natives that come summer, will be a hive of pollinator activity.
